New Meal Monday: Homemade Maple BBQ Sauce

In keeping with our theme of celebrating National BBQ Month with a variety of grill related recipes, we thought we'd take on making our own BBQ sauce.  BBQ Sauce is a staple in our house in the summer as we love using it on a variety of things, in particular chicken.  That said I like using it sandwiches as well. There's a variety of recipes out there you could follow.  Many call for using some tomato sauce and tomato paste, but we were looking to keep things simple so leaned on starting with ketchup.  There's a variety ways to season the sauce depending upon what you like out of your sauce, but we wanted it to be a have a little spice, but have a slightly sweet finish.  So we put a Vermont twist on it by adding Maple Syrup to give the sauce a bit of sweetness!  It was really easy to make and was pretty delicious.  If you like spicier sauce you may want to increase some of the spice quantities, or if you wanted something smokier you may look at adding some liquid smoke, or even some whiskey-aged maple syrup.  But if you're looking for a good, balanced, easy to make BBQ sauce we'd definitely recommend this recipe!

What you'll need:

  • 1C ketchup
  • 1C finely diced yellow onion
  • 3/4C VT Maple Syrup
  • 1/4 brown sugar
  • 1/4C water
  • 2Tbsp minced garlic
  • 2Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • 1/2 tsp Teeny Tiny Spice Whoopass*
  • 1/4 Lemon Juice
  • 2 tsp lemon zest

How you'll do it:

  1. Mix all ingredients together in a medium sauce pan.
  2. Boil mixture for 20 min.
  3. Let cool and enjoy!

*If you don't have this spice, you could substitute for it a few different ways depending upon your taste.  We'd probably recommend a 1/4tsp Cayenne pepper, 1/4 tsp black pepper and a dash of oregano. You could even sub with an equal part of your favorite hot sauce!
