Well today is Peanut Butter & Jelly Day, celebrating the most popular sandwich!
Since making a PB&J is pretty simple and doesn't really require a recipe we figured we'd try making our own homemade peanut butter, and putting that on the sandwich!
Making homemade peanut butter is really easy, and you can play around with ingredients to suit your tastes! Once we got going we couldn't stop at just one peanut butter, so we got creative and made a few different versions! Started with a basic peanut butter, then followed a similar approach but made a chocolate peanut butter! After that we made a maple peanut butter, and then added bacon to make a maple bacon peanut butter. The maple made for a bit of an unusual consistency for the peanut butter, but the flavor was still what you'd expect!
Regular Peanut Butter:
What you'll need:
- 2 cups peanuts
- 3/4 tsp kosher salt
- 1 tsp honey
- 2 tsp peanut oil
How you'll do it:
- On a sheet pan, roast peanuts at 350F for about 10-15 min until nuts are lightly browned and aromatic. Shake pan once or twice during baking to turn them.
- Once nuts are cool, put in food processor and process for 1 min.
- Scrape sides of bowl, and process for 3 more min.
- Add salt, honey and oil and process until well combined. (If you'd like chunky peanut butter, prior to processing put 1/3 cup of roasted nuts in food processor and pulse until nuts are chopped into small pieces. Set aside and mix into peanut butter at the end)
