New Meal Monday: Coffee Rubbed Steak & Eggs

October 02, 2017

If you've ever had steak and eggs for breakfast, you know its a pretty hearty way to start the day!
While this meal isn't always on the menu on every place that serves breakfast, its a safe bet you can find it in any classic American diner!
This past weekend was International Coffee Day, and lots of places (including our stores) were giving away coffee and finding various ways to celebrate.  All this talk about coffee inspired us to make a little change to the classic diner meal, and rub that steak with some coffee!  The coffee grinds give the outside of the steak a crispy finish, while also adding a delicious flavor.  Since my wife doesn't eat meat, I was cooking breakfast for one when I made this, so if your making multiple servings, increase accordingly.  Also, be sure to use a finely ground coffee (pre-ground packaged coffee will be too coarse).  Also, I'd recommend a dark, or espresso, roasted coffee to make sure the flavoring still comes through after cooking!

What you'll need:

  • 2 tsp finely ground dark roast coffee
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • 1/4 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp oregano
  • salt
  • pepper
  • Strip Steak
  • 1 tsp olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp butter
  • 2 eggs

How you'll do it:

  1. Preheat oven 400 degrees.
  2. Heat a bit of oil cast iron skillet over medium heat.  In a separate non-stick skillet heat 1/2 tsp oil and 1/2tsp butter over medium low heat
  3. In a bowl combine coffee, paprika, chili powder, cumin, onion powder, oregano in a bowl.
  4. Rub oil on steak and salt and pepper each side.  The place steak in bowl, flipping to cover both sides in coffee mixture.
  5. Cook steak in skillet to crisp each side (about 1-1.5 min per side), then place skillet in oven till cooked to your preference (about 5 min for medium)
  6. At the same time, crack eggs into non-stick skillet with butter and oil. Cover, and cook to your liking. (cover helps retain steam and cook eggs on both sides).
  7. Place steak and eggs on plate and enjoy!

This past week, my family and I congregated at the Jersey Shore for an annual family party.  While MTV has given the Jersey Shore a bit of a reputation, much of the area where I grew up is actually full…
